Deaf, CPS and the Education System...what you need to know
The Child Protective Services (CPS) process does not travel a linear path. From the moment a referral is made, to closing a case, this process can take many twists and turns. Far too often, CPS will appear at a school without an interpreter expecting the educational interpreter to provide interpretation between the child and CPS. While this may be more convenient for CPS, there are multiple reasons why this isn’t most appropriate for the child, the educational institution including the educational interpreter and CPS. During this webinar, small group sessions will be utilized to discuss these and other issues. Professional knowledge and experience will be supplemented with the presenter’s personal experiences as a foster and an adoptive parent.
This webinar is beneficial for all members of a dDeaf child’s educational team.

This webinar’s title has recently changed from “Insights into Child Protective Services for Education Interpreters” to “Deaf, CPS and the Education System...what you need to know”.
Educational Objectives:
1. Participants will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the Child Protective Services (CPS) process from referral to case closed.
2. Participants will be able to justify why CPS should not be utilizing the school’s educational interpreters but providing their own for all contact with students, staff, and parents.
3. Participants will identify talking points that will allow them to advise their administration regarding the need for CPS to provide an interpreter instead of asking the educational interpreter to serve in a capacity in which they may not be suited.
****Warning: This webinar discusses child abuse (physical, mental and emotional), neglect as well as drug use and domestic violence****
